I just picked up the new Oasis album (Don't Believe The Truth) and the new Gorillaz album (Demon Days), and all I have to say is.... WOW. I'll break it down one by one.
Don't Believe The Truth: Simply put, the best Oasis album since (What's the Story) Morning Glory?. It opens with "Turn Up The Sun", a song by Andy Bell, that sets the tone for the entire album. It is a rocked-out, catchy, The Who-ish three minutes that proves the fact that Oasis does, in fact, still have the ability to write good music. The first single, "Lyla", has been maligned in many circles, but I can't see why. It is Oasis' classic style plus a little influence from The Who. If you don't like those two bands, then something is wrong with you. "The Importance Of Being Idle", "Part Of The Queue", and "A Bell Will Ring" only restate the fact of the case: Oasis is back. However, the real winner on this album is the final track, "Let There Be Love". If "Lyla" shows that Oasis could still make "Supersonic", "Let There Be Love" shows that Noel Gallagher is still capable of writing another "Wonderwall". Overall, it's an amazing album. Oasis may be ten dysfunctional years old, but they're still just rediscovering their prime, and I can't wait for what is sure to come next. This album is a solid 9/10.
Demon Days: I can guarantee to you right now that this is the most original album of the year. Demon Days continues right where Gorillaz left off: marching onward into the realm of creative genious/insanity. The first single, "Feel Good Inc.", is destined to be a superhit. In the first week of its release, when only downloads were counted, it made #22. The second week of wide release pulled it up to #1. "Feel Good Inc." is like "Clint Eastwood" all over again, except that this time the song is better. If "Feel Good Inc." were the only song on the album, my $15 would not have been wasted. However, as it is, Demon Days contains several other good songs. On my first listen-through, I've already come to like "Last Living Souls", "El Manana", "DARE", and "Kids With Guns". This album also deserves a 9/10.
Overall, I'd say these albums were an extremely good investment. If you want some good new music, go out and buy Don't Believe The Truth and Demon Days.
EDIT: If you like Gorillaz, you're sure to find this funny.
