Would I be able to read this without having read the Lord of the Rings books, or are they connected in a way that it would be better for me to read the LotR books first?

Actually, The Hobbit takes place before LOTR, so if you read it first you'd likely enjoy LOTR more. But the first chapter of The Hobbit moves a little slowly (DA said he was bored out of his fucking mind, but I think he was exaggerating).
Anyway, don't worry about it. You're supposed to read either The Hobbit or The Silmarillion first, if you want to read the storyline in order.
