Anyways, I have a problem. The book starts off with something called Ainulindale, is this part of the book?

Yes. It's sort of like the book of Genesis in the bible... it tells how the Valar (Elvish gods) created the world. It also introduces the main bad guy, though... if you skip this part, you'll have more trouble understanding the rest of the book.
BTW, there was a thing called Alkallabeth at the end of my copy of the Silm... this is also interesting reading, since it tells all about Numenor.

I actually got to do a book report on the Silm for an English project... I probably got a 100, just because this English teacher has never read it.

Personally, I'd advise skipping Ainulindale and Valaquenta. After those bits, it gets much more interesting, you don't really miss too much of the plot, unless you are really interested in world creation myths.

If I can't find anything later today (which is likely) I'll probably check this out, even though I've already read Children of Hurin. (which I believe you said basically spoils this book Pinata?)

I'm not sure whether it spoils it or not, as I've not finished Children of Hurin, but so far it's covering the same ground as The Silmarillion from different points of view. So you'll know some stuff going in that I didn't, but probably won't know everything there is to know (the tale of Beren and Luthien, for example, is not something that I've seen covered in Children of Hurin yet, and if I remember correctly that takes up several chapters of The Silmarillion). Anyway, I'd give it a try just in case it's mostly new stuff... Hurin and Turin are major characters in The Silmarillion, so the stuff regarding them will likely mostly be retread territory, but there are a lot of other characters (some people say too many to keep track of, though I didn't have that problem).

Yea, I'll have to look into it next time. I had too good a trip this time and actually found too many books. Oh, and I even found The Return of the King this time. The Fellowship of the Ring was still not there though, so I didn't check those out. My only concern is the copies that my library has of the LotR books have the movie characters on the covers. So they are probably some really lame movie-adapted version or something.  |
