yeah, I know the hobbit isn't really considered part of the lord of the rings trilogy, but it does lead into them, so I added it in.
My fave book is return of the king

The Two Towers was the best book... more suspenseful. The first time I read it, I was like, Holy shit, they killed Frodo! They didn't, of course, but the way it was left hanging made for one hell of a cliffhanger ending.

The Two Towers gets my vote...The Battle of Helm's Deep was so much cooler in the book than in the movies.

Yeah, the book described it better, but it was pretty ok to me. If they had made it truer to the book, it would have made the movie like 5 hours long hahaha

I voted Two Towers, only because of the Shelob sequence and Helm's Deep. The other books were awesome too, but if you have those two things in one book, not even Pellenor Fields can beat it.

I voted Fellowship. The Two Towers I found a bit boring, with the exception of the end, and though Return of the King was good, I just liked the Fellowship better.

Other than the fact that Tolkien wanted LotR published as one volume, and also preferred to work on the mythology and languages of Middle-Earth...
