Just for fun do you know any old wifes tales to do with Witch craft and where they came from I'd like to hear them.
One i know is it's rude to point, this comes form a old christian thing when they were paranoid over who was a witch and who wasn't, and they also believe that a witch could cast some terrible curse by just pointing.(I wish) but any way thats why its rude to point.

I know in Ireland single farmers must never kill a hare on a summers eve because the hair might be a witch and if he kills her then he ruins his chances of ever marrying, his farm will fail etc etc so on and so forth...all the usual jazz.

I don't know about witches, but i've heard that the reason we say "god bless you" or "bless you" after someone sneezes was because arround the time of the Bubonic Plague, when someone sneezed they thought it meant you had something evil in you, and soul was trying to push it out. (or something along those lines)
Edit- Oh, and during the Plague a sneeze meant you had it, so you'd say "god bless you" and hope the person would get better.

I heard that was becasue your soul was trying to escape adn bless you forced it back in?!? but then again these things all get mixed up in the retelling.

I heard it was an evil spirit or something which your soul was getting rid off. But on the plus side all our versions include the soul in someway or another.

I like this one again nothing to do with witches but its fun
Monday's child is fair of face; Tuesday's child is full of grace; Wednesday's child is full of woe; Thursday's child has far to go; Friday's child is loving and giving; Saturday's child works hard for a living. But the child that is born on the Sabbath day is fair and wise, good and gay.
I'm a thusrdays child giving me far to go
these are to do with witchcraft...
Do not lean a broom against a bed. The evil spirits in the broom will cast a spell on the bed. Obviously because witches use broom sticks
Rosemary planted by the doorstep will keep witches away THis is not ture rosemary is for remenberance and love and stuff like that.
This one is true Put salt on the doorstep of a new house and no evil can enter.
i dobt these are tho Ivy on your house keeps witches away. Never let milk boil over, as this will bring bad luck. Always throw salt over your left shoulder if you spill some. Biting your tongue ... means you've told a fib.
In Britain (and possibly in other parts of Northern Europe), black cats are considered lucky. In Mediterranean countries and the USA, black cats are considered unlucky. In both cases it's because of the association with witches. In Britain, a witch (or her familiar) has just crossed your path and ignored you, which is good luck. Elsewhere, any encounter with a witch is bad luck.
merged tripple post (soz but pinata has rules about this kind of thing)

True! Even if you saw someone with a hare at all, you were considered a witch because the hare was in the same circle as a witch!
