Pinata, if you think this belongs somewhere else just move it. There aren't really any general book categories, and I didn't feel like posting it in the general forum. *shrug*
I'm reading Califia's Daughters by Leigh Richards. I'm a couple hundred pages in and a little bored. -.-

Never heard of it. What's it about?
I posted a long list of the stuff I'm reading right now on The Conclave... don't feel like typing it again. Suffice to say, it's a damn lot of Stephen King.
BTW Ape, on the Conclave I asked you for recommendations for horror novels... don't know whether you saw that or not.

Califia's Children is a post-apocalyptic book where women can't seem to produce male children. Whenever a boy is born it dies shortly after. So whenever a male lives long enough to become an adult, he becomes one of the most valuable and most-protected items of the group/village/city. Its just now getting better, after you get past the first couple hundred or so pages. Its funny, the 2 books I checked out from the library were both post-apocalypse settings. Did it unintentionaly. Perhaps its a sign, I wonder what it is. Fried Chicken hot pockets? Nah... As for horror novels, I really don't know. My library SERIOUSLY blows. Its 1 floor, with maybe 7 or 8 aisles of book shelves, which are rather short. 2 of these are filled with magazines, romances, and westerns. Then there is a half aisle (1 side) of Fantasy/Science-Fiction(A good bit of this is M:tG/Forgotten Realms/Dragon Lance/Star Wars/etc and then the rest is more Science Fiction than Fantasy, which sucks), and the remaining 5-6 rows are simpley 'fiction.' 90 percent of the 'fiction seems to be mystery novels. So the selection is limited. I've never even read a horror novel. I mostly just read the ordinary fantasy stuff. =/ (That was partly a rant) I may search through the nonfiction again the next time I'm in there just to see if I can't find anything, but don't expect much from a library in a small town in southern Ohio. >_<

Meh, I thought you'd have some expert advice for some reason... forgot you said your library was a shithole.

My entire town is a shithole. Finding a job is almost as hard as finding a good book around here. -.- I just found out that our library actually has a website. Check out how huge the place is. Huzzah!

That pic's not showing up for some reason. Anyway, look in the section where they've got mystery books and try to find some Stephen King. Especially old-school, pre-Green Mile Stephen King (you know, the really scary shit). Since you like horror, I think you'll appreciate his work. Too bad your library's not like mine... the local one (actually, it's almost an hour's drive away, but it's worth it) here is run by hardcore sci-fi/horror/fantasy nerds, and hosts several conventions and a monthly film festival called the Fantasmo Cult Cinema Explosion (highly recommended if you're ever in Chesapeake, Virginia... they show some really obscure old movies, ranging from zombie flicks to Bruce Lee-era kung fu movies).

I've seen Stephen King in our fiction section. They only had a few, and for some reason they were all MASSIVE. Like, 3000 page hard-covered monstrosities. I'll check it out the next time I go, unless I already have a pile of Terry Brooks. I'm also wanting to actually read the Lord of the Rings books. Yea, I STILL havn't read those yet. I've never seen those at my library though, and it wouldn't surprise me if they don't carry them. Does you're library have nonbooks? I found it strange, but mine actually has CDs and Movies. Even computer games that can be checked out. Its weird. I don't know why people rent movies when they are free at the library. Edit- I guess if they show movies then they probaly have movies to check outright? *slaps forhead*

Yeah, they have movies and CDs (though the CDs are mostly audiobooks). I haven't seen computer games there, though.
Stephen King writes big books. It, the one I'm reading right now (about, among other things, a flesh-eating clown), is 1100-odd pages. Christine, the one about the car possessed by the devil, is only a little upwards of 500 pages, though. Cell, a more recent book about cell phones turning people into zombies, is rather short for a Stephen King book too... I don't think it even hit 500 pages, though it was definitely 400. There are also three books of short stories (Skeleton Crew and Everything's Eventual... I forget the name of the other one) that look big, but are relatively quick reads because you can prioritize stories you want to read more and even skip over the ones that don't sound quite as interesting entirely.
The LOTR trilogy is rather difficult to read... Tolkien's writing style is very 19th-century, meaning that he phrases things in a very antiquated way (it's not as bad as trying to slog through Shakespeare, but it's hard nonetheless). Just as an example, he says "ere" instead of "before".

I searched my library's online card catalog thing, the only copies of the LOTR book are currently in the high school library. Yea, awesome... -.-
I'm reading Lord Brocktree by Brian Jacques again.

Lord Brocktree... what's that about?

Its a very simple fantasy tale about a kingdom being invaded and a wandering/questing warrior being 'called' to help defend the place. The catch is, all the character's are animals. Lord Brocktree is a 'badger lord/warrior,' he's the one being 'called' to the kingdom(populated by a bunch of old hare's who can't defend themselves,) which is being invaded by an army of huge rats led by an evil cat. It's a Young Adult book that I bought in like 8th grade but I like it. *shrug*

Actually, that sounds pretty cool. I was at the Carolina Raptor Center last year (it's like a zoo where all the exhibits are birds of prey), and there was a book similar to that in the gift shop there. I don't remember the name of it now, and I was running short on cash so I didn't buy it, but it was a fantasy-type thing where all the characters are owls.

The Children of Hurin by Tolkien (J.R.R. or Christopher, you be the judge ) I found where they keep the Tolkien books in my library. They had 5 copies of The Two Towers (and 3 different versions it seems...) and no copies of The Fellowship or Return of the King. They had 3 or 4 copies of The Hobbit though, and a couple copies of The Silmarillion. They didn't have book 2 after Armageddon's Children by Terry Brooks. They had some Terry Goodkind, but all the books from the Sword of the Truth were scattered about the storyline, and book 1 wasn't there. (They had like, book 3, 5, 7, 9, 10, etc) I saw some Stephen King, but I didn't see the short-stories book. They had some of his Dark Tower books, but only like 2 or 3. I seriously hate my library. Every single book in it is a part of a 3-6 book series, and they NEVER have every book. -.- I got this book and the Lorwyn book. And guess what! No Morningtide.

I'm reading The Children of Hurin now too... seems like it follows from The Silmarillion so far, so if you haven't read that one you'll get some nice spoilers.
Don't know for sure what Lorwyn is... I think I've heard of it, but I can't remember exactly.

I guess I can't complain, they did have the Silmarillion, I just didn't know they were connected. I havn't experienced too much confusion so far though, aside from when I tried to read the Introduction and got so lost I nearly forgot I was still reading. I just skipped to the first chapter. Edit- Oh, and Lorwyn is a Magic: the Gathering book. It's the most recent block, and Morningtide is the 2nd set...but my library doesn't carry the Morningtide book because they suck.
