As much as I like LOTR, I have to say that Last Call by Tim Powers is the greatest book I have ever read, much less the greatest fantasy book. The connections he makes in his books are amazing, and so is the way he can pull from so many sources without suspending disbelief past the point other good fantasy authors do. Oh, and the book is so realistic that you'll never be able to play poker for money afterwards without making sure you don't have any reason to want to not be watched.

LOTR is definitely way up there, but I have to say the book I'm reading now is the best I've read so far. That, however, doesn't say much, considering a good amount of the fantasy I read is crap, albeit enjoyable crap. Anywho, "The Eye of the World", despite the fact that it moves slower than molasses in January, is the best fantasy book I've read yet.

Good book, DM. It picks up toward the end, too... and The Great Hunt is a LOT faster-paced.
I think for me it's probably a tie between The Belgariad (I count it as one book for the sake of my own sanity) and the series I'm reading right now, The Sword of Truth by Terry Goodkind.

The Lord of the Rings is my choice for best fantasy ever written (for adults). For children my choice is the Narnia series. I also really liked the Sword of Shannara.

I haven't finished The Sword of Shannara yet... I can rest assured it gets better, then?

I read it when I was in high school, and just loved it. It seemed to be faster paced than the Lord of the Rings. I plan on reading it again, but I don't have a copy of it yet. Sometimes though, when I read books as an adult that I read when I was a kid, some of the magic seems to be gone.

I hated those books with a passion when I read them 4 years ago. Actually, the opposite seems to usually be true with me: all the really good stuff, like Ender's Game and Tim Powers's books, just get better.

I'm going to have to go with the Prydain Chronicles by Lloyd Alexander. Technically classified as children's books, I classify them as fricking amazing. And by "them", I mean the last two. Although the first 3 are worth reading, and needed to understand the last two.
